May 6: Lily of the Valley and Dames Rocket

This blog entry is about two of my favorite wildflowers. They are both exquisite and one of them is associated with May, my birth month. It's Lily of the Valley.  The blossoms remind me of Japanese lanterns.

All parts of Lily of the Valley are poisonous, which is just as well because they are too beautiful to destroy. The flower has some interesting symbolism. In religious paintings is associated with humility and purity, and by extension, the power of mankind to envision a better world. It is also known as "Our Lady's tears" or "Mary's tears" from Mary's weeping at Jesus' crucifixion, or Eve's tears when she was driven from the garden of Eden with Adam. It  is associated with Christ's second coming. Not coincidentally, in pagan mythology Lily of the Valley signifies the return of happiness.

My other favorite spring flower is Dames Rocket.
Dames Rockets
It's considered an invasive species in Michigan, but the great thing about that is that I can pick all I want and not feel guilty! It was once used as a salad vegetable, and supposedly there are many health benefits from ingesting it. Now it's considered a level 2 nuisance in the United States, so eat away!
