April 23: Black Jetbead and Redbud

These aren't really wildflowers but flowering trees. But since they have flowers, I'm interested!

The first is Black Jetbead, which you'd think would have black flowers. But it doesn't. It does have black beads for fruit which are VERY TOXIC, so DO NOT EAT THEM.
Black Jetbead
Black Jetbead is not native to Michigan and is not susceptible to pests or disease, so, being hardy, it's naturally considered an invasive species. :-) Many people use it as an ornamental shrub because it works in sun or heavy shade and is tolerant of dry soil.

Another flowering tree is Redbud.
Redbud
You CAN eat on Redbud flowers. It's said that they have a slightly nutty flavor, but I didn't notice much of any taste when I tried one. Suggested uses are for pancakes, as a garnish for in salad, or even as a unique pickle relish! When green and tender, the seed pods are also edible and can be cooked and served with butter like peas.
